Green Tea — The Best Anti-Oxidant
Green tea is antioxidant packed and has been used as a medicine in eastern countries for millennia not only as a refreshing beverage, but as a medicine. Modern medicine has conducted studies on green tea to investigate the claims that people have made for thousands of years concerning the beneficial effects of the leaf. It is traditionally consumed after a meal to leave the mouth feeling fresh and clean. It is currently being studied to see if it will help prevent osteoporosis. Green tea is known for its high content of vitamins and minerals. It contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in amounts comparable to a lemon.
Green tea is the best form of this anti-oxidant because it’s not fermented during processing. Black tea is fermented, which changes some of its anti-oxidant compounds. Green tea is especially rich in EGCG. With fermentation, many of the polyphenols are oxidized. Green tea is a popular beverage in Asian cultures, where many people drink eight or more cups per day. It has become increasingly popular in the West, owing in part to reports of its health benefits, such as preventing heart disease and cancer.
Green tea is different from the black tea that most of us drink. The leaves are younger and not necessarily processed. Green tea is unprocessed and is therefore rich in anti-oxidants that protect the body against free radicals. This helps the body guard itself against molecules that can cause DNA damage which can turn cells cancerous. Green tea is therefore the perfect meditative aid: it acts as a mild stimulant, without causing insomnia or nervousness. It refreshes and quiets.
